INEC Should Conduct Local Government Elections—Hon. Akala Decries State Manipulation

The credibility of local government elections and the role of State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) in Nigeria were the focus of discussion on Electoral Reforms Half Hour, where Hon. Samuel Akala, former Chairman of Karu Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, called for major electoral reforms. Hon. Akala advocated for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take over the conduct of Local Government elections, citing widespread State Government interference.
Speaking on the topic “State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) and Electoral Credibility”, Hon. Akala criticized SIECs, arguing that they lack true independence and function as tools of State Governments. He noted that State Governments manipulate these commissions to maintain political control, making credible elections at the Local Government level nearly impossible.
He explained that the flawed system has led to voter apathy, as opposition parties often refuse to participate in Local Government elections due to concerns over fairness. According to him, State Governments appoint political loyalists into electoral commissions, control their funding, and ultimately dictate election outcomes, undermining democracy at the grassroots level.
To address these concerns, Akala proposed two possible solutions. First, he called for constitutional amendments to grant financial and operational autonomy to State Electoral Commissions, ensuring they function independently without interference from State Governments. Alternatively, he recommended transferring the responsibility of conducting Local Government elections to INEC, arguing that this would enhance transparency, restore public confidence, and encourage voter participation.
He further suggested that Local Government elections be held alongside national and state elections to reduce costs and streamline the electoral process. Additionally, he emphasized the need for full administrative and financial autonomy for Local Governments, stating that stronger, independent local councils could play a crucial role in addressing Nigeria’s developmental and security challenges.
His remarks come amid ongoing national debates on electoral reforms, as stakeholders seek ways to improve transparency, accountability, and efficiency in Nigeria’s democratic system.
