Comrade John Odah, former General Secretary of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), emphasized the crucial role labor unions play in promoting electoral integrity in Nigeria,on an episode of Electoral Reform Half Hour on NTA NEWS 24.  He stated that labor organizations have historically influenced political processes, advocating for fair electoral laws and mobilizing citizens for civic engagement.

Comrade Odah recounted the pivotal role of trade unions and civil society in Nigeria’s democratic transition, noting that the NLC’s early efforts to engage presidential candidates during the 1999 elections set a precedent for accountability in governance. He highlighted the establishment of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) as a direct outcome of labour’s involvement in political discourse.

Addressing the challenges faced in today’s electoral landscape, Comrade Odah pointed out issues such as voter suppression, electoral malpractice, and political intimidation that continue to undermine electoral integrity. He called for a renewed commitment from labour unions to educate and mobilize citizens about their electoral rights and responsibilities, citing successful examples from other West African nations were labour unions have led the charge for political engagement.

While discussing recent electoral reforms, Comrade Odah criticized the current approach to electoral financing, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations to combat vote-buying and corruption. He advocated for the National Assembly to pass legislation allowing for diaspora voting, stating that Nigerians abroad should have the opportunity to participate in the democratic process, as their voices are vital to the country’s political landscape.

In conclusion, Comrade Odah stressed the importance of collective action among labor unions and civil society to address the barriers to credible elections in Nigeria, urging all stakeholders to unite for a transparent and accountable electoral process.
